Early Life, Family, And Education
Start with the essential facts. Josh was born in Lagos, Nigeria, on September 1, 1998, to parents Pius Okogie and Anthonia Okogie.
When he was only three years old, he was sent to the United States. Before that, they lived in Nigeria by themselves.
He grew up with his four brothers and sisters, Evaristus, Nathaniel, Rachael, and Emmanuel. Josh is the family’s fourth child.
At this point, the whole family lived in Snellville, Georgia. He first played basketball when he was only eleven years old.
He went to school at Shiloh High School. Nathaniel, a year older than he was, played soccer at Brewton-Parker College.
Josh used to play football as well, but not the organized kind. He played the piano, fiddle, and tuba very well. He does like good music. And you say his name with a sharp “Oh-ko-Gee.”
High School Career
Josh got the Gwinnett Daily Post’s Player of the Year award for two years in a row, in 2015 and 2016. This is one of his high school honors and achievements.
In 2016, he was put on the first team for the Atlanta Tipoff Club. He was also named an All-State player by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2017.
Josh also helped his high school team win the Region 8-AAAAAA title with a 24-6 record.
As a senior in 2015-16, he scored 19.3 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 4.9 steals per game. In 2014, he made it to the state semi-finals.
College Career
Josh went to the Georgia Institute of Technology to study and play sports. He got 16.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in his first year. So, in 2016, he got to play on the ACC All-Freshman Team.
He was named to the 2017–18 All-ACC team in his second year. On November 26, 2016, he led his team to a win over Tulane. At Georgia Tech, Josh averaged 18.2 points per game for his team.
After that, on May 21, he said he would be in the 2018 NBA draught. He did not hire an agency, though. So, if none of the teams picked him, he could return to college.
He also has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, which he got from Georgia Tech.
Professional Career
When it came to his career, the Minnesota Timberwolves hired him with the 20th overall pick in the 1st round of the 2018 NBA draft, less than a month after he said he wanted to be in the draft. He gave up on his two years of college all at once.
The fact that he was picked in the first round was great news, but it also put weight on Josh. He also talked about it.
After Jimmy Buttler, Josh was the last man to be put in the team’s starting lineup in November of last year. During the 2018 season, he only played for 22 minutes. After that, he got involved with the 2019 NBA Summer League.
Josh was also announced as a part of the 2019 Rising Stars Challenge on January 29, 2019.
Okogie joined the Phoenix Suns on July 2, 2022. Okogie had his best game ever on December 7, when he scored 28 points in a 125–98 loss to the Boston Celtics.
