First month of the season could miss by Montas
The Yankees plan to start the regular season without Montas in the rotation, as the right-hander reportedly continues to battle burning in his pitching shoulder.
The New York Post reported Saturday that Montas was 8-10 weeks behind in offseason workouts and could miss the 1st month of the regular season. Montas, who turns 30 in March 2023, agreed to a 7.5 million Dollar contract on Friday, avoiding arbitration.
Montas dealt with similar issues last season with the Athletics and Yankees. He was forced out of his July 3 start in Oakland and sat out nearly three weeks, though he was strong in two starts before Aug. Cooper Bowman was shipped from New York to the A’s for Montas and right-hander Lou Trivino.
Montas is 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA in 8 regular-season starts for the Yankees, the last of which was Sept. 16 in Milwaukee when a shoulder problem flared up again. He returned to the court in the first inning of the American League Championship Series against the Astros when the club said they expected Montas to be fully healthy before spring training.
Yankees head coach Aaron Boone has placed Montas in his likely starting rotation behind Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Luis Severino, and Nestor Cortez. Montas’ injury could spark a spring rivalry between Domingo German and Clark Schmidt for fifth. Montas in rotation.
