Despite coaching changes, the Cards are hopeful about Arenado

Wainwright concluded, “Long story short: Yes, this will be the final one. “Everyone unwind, and let me pitch. Let’s see what happens if I constantly perform in public without worrying about it.

 

Wainwright has 195 victories to his credit over a distinguished career that has seen him place fifth or higher voting for the National League Cy Young Award five times. He should be able to reach 200 victories and possibly make a run at 210, which would tie him for second most in franchise history behind only Bob Gibson (251). He stated that he is trying to surpass 212 career victories, which would need him to match his 2021 win total of 17 victories since it would enable him to pass Hall of Famer and close friend John Smoltz.

 

Last season, Wainwright made 32 starts and posted a record of 11-12 with a 3.71 ERA; this was the first losing campaign of his career in which he made at least 20 starts. By only succeeding twice in his final six starts and posting a 7.22 ERA, he believed he “ruined” an otherwise successful season. He fell eight and a third innings short of his preseason goal of 200 thanks to that bad final stretch, which he constantly attributed to a “dead arm” problem. He was also five wins short of that mark. The Cardinals were swept by the No. 6 seed Phillies in the NL Wild Card Series, which prevented him from pitching in the postseason. The Phillies went on to win the NL pennant and will take on the Astros in the World Series starting Friday.

And in my opinion, if we win one of those two games, we’ll go on to win Game 3 and the World Series. That’s how my brain functions. So, I’ll consider that as I perform reps of the bench press. That will motivate me to put forth more effort and prepare better.

It’s the second shoulder problem for the 20-year-old shortstop since being drafted sixth overall out of a Texas high school in 2021. He had surgery to repair a posterior labrum rupture in the same left shoulder just one month after getting picked.

 

 

Lawlar recovered in time to begin his first entire season with Single-A Visalia and eventually advanced to Double-A Amarillo in 2022. In 100 games with four different D-backs affiliates, he hit.303/.401/.509 with 16 home runs and 39 steals. It meant his promotion to the Fall League to make up for some of the time missed due to a benign growth in his right rib, which required a rehab stint in the Arizona Complex League.

 

Lawlar is ranked as MLB.com’s No. 12 overall prospect, a shortstop and right-handed bat. He can develop five abilities that are above ordinary to plus. Once healthy, he’ll continue to play a significant role in the youthful and growing Arizona organization, including No. 3 overall prospect Corbin Carroll, No. 2 overall choice Druw Jones, and Minor League strikeout leader Brandon Pfaadt in 2022. However, Hoskins played great defense and finished 3-for-9 with three two-run home runs. That equals the most a Phillie scored in two straight playoff games.
