Who is the best MLB hitter right now?
Based on a combination of contact, power, cricket discipline, and what we call “pitch immunity,” we’ve pieced together a ranking of the best hitters in baseball right now. Each of the four categories is assigned a transcript grade, and the rank is based on each player’s grade point average.
3. Bo Bichette, Blue Jays
It hasn’t been an exciting season for the 24-year-old shortstop, who was hitting .260/.305/.420 at the end of August. Since the calendar flipped to September, Bichette has been hot, going 16-for-31 (.516) with five homers and 14 RBIs in seven games. That included a three-run homer in Game 2 of a double at Baltimore last match and three other games in which he has allowed at least three hits in that span.
2. Shohei Ohtani, Angel
Will the 1-2 at the top of the batter power rankings reflect this year’s AL MVP award voting? It’s only the second time Ohtani has finished in the top 10 this season after hitting 868 in nine straight games with six home runs. Oh yeah, and he also has a 2.58 ERA in 23 games in 2022.
1. Aaron Judge, Yankees
Aaron Judge is the Best Hitter in MLB right now. He’s chasing home run history, but understandably the focus on the big fly has overshadowed Judge’s overall performance at the plate. Before the All-Star break, his OPS was as high as 983 and entering the match, and his second-half OPS was 335 pts more elevated than that.
