The Phoenix Suns acquired Johnson and Dario ari from the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for the sixth overall selection in the 2019 NBA draft, Jarrett Culver, on June 20, 2019. The Suns announced that they had hired Johnson the same day (July 6) that the deal was finalized. Johnson started his NBA in a 130-122 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on October 26, 2019. On 11/19, in a 120-116 defeat to the Sacramento Kings, he tallied a season-high 18 points. The next day, on December 5, Johnson scored a season-high 30 points in a 139-132 OT victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.

On February 10, 2020, the club will make Johnson its starting point guard for the first time as they take on the Los Angeles Lakers.
