Blue Jays sign reliever Chad Green to an $8.5 million, two-year contract

The World Series will feature the Astros vs. the National League champion Phillies, with Game 1 scheduled for Friday at Minute Maid Park. With another victory in Game 1 of the World Series, Houston will become the seventh club to begin playoffs with at least seven straight wins, breaking the previous mark of the 2014 Royals. The Astros also have a chance to become the first club in the Divisional Era (since 1969) to have an unbeaten postseason, joining the 1976 Reds (who played seven games). With 11-1 records, the 2005 White Sox and 1999 Yankees share the Wild Card Era record (since 1995).

When the Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres made a throwing error in the eighth inning of Game 4, the Astros were behind 5-4. The Astros had runners on first and second with one out instead of a double play to clear the bases, and both scored. Yordan Alvarez singled to tie the game, and Alex Bregman singled off Clay Holmes to bring home Pea with the winning run.

 

Bregman said, This team has worked so hard; Im so glad to be a part of it. so pleased with this bunch, and we still have more baseball to play. So many players stepped up this year — the coaching staff, our support staff, every single individual that had a hand in this.

 

Hoskins was going to his first World Series

 

First baseman Rhys Hoskins heard the names and saw the pictures as soon as he joined the Phillies. Those superstars left quite a legacy as part of the baseball team that won the 2008 World Series.

After Philadelphia defeated San Diego 4-3 in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series on Sunday at Citizens Bank Park, Hoskins is one step closer to being part of the team legend. With a 4-1 series victory, the Phillies won the National League pennant and advanced to their first Fall Classic in 13 years.

Hoskins, whose four NLCS home runs were the most by a Phillie in franchise history, added, everything. This organization is the one that provided me the opportunity to make a difference in Philadelphia in any manner and trusted in me. Many individuals have been involved in this, dating back to when I was selected, especially when I arrived in 2017. Many individuals who arent here but have worked hard have created the foundation on which others here may thrive, dream, and triumph.

 

Hoskins is the position player with the longest stay with Philadelphia. They took him out of Sacramento State in the fifth round of the 2014

 

MLB Draft; He was called up in 2017 despite a 96-loss season. He faced late collapses in three seasons with 80+ wins and missed out on postseason participation.

 

Even in the postseason, it hasn’t been the most smooth journey for 29-year-old Hoskins, who hoped it would reach this stage. He started the postseason 1-for-19 with seven strikeouts, earning the ire of the fervent Phillies crowd every time he went to the plate.

In the NL Division Series Game 3, Hoskins converted those boos into applause by hitting a three-run home run off Braves right-hander Spencer Strider as part of a six-run third inning. His spectacular bat flip, which consisted of raising his arms and swinging the bat above his head, will go down in local lore forever.

 

At the 2017 All-Star Game festivities in Miami, where Hoskins participated in the Futures Game and Teller in the Celebrity Softball Game, one of those supporters who are constantly in Hoskins corner, actor Miles Teller of  Top Gun: Maverick, first met the Phillie. Over the years, they have stayed in touch.

 

Teller, a native of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, recalls seeing the grand slam of Shane Victorinos in the 2008 NLDS Game 2 while seated with his father close to the left-field foul pole. His seats for Hoskins postseason antics were closer to the playing surface.

 

 

It’s terrific, Teller remarked. He hit some huge home runs. His home runs were all-powerful. This squad has an intriguing cast, and they are all now experiencing success.

 

Hoskins hit a long ball in San Diego’s defeat of Game 2 on Wednesday. But this weekend, the Phillies came home, and Hoskins once more heard some jeers during the pregame introductions. The jeers started again when Hoskins committed his second postseason mistake in the fifth inning of Game 3 on Friday. The leadoff runner then scored.

 

However, Hoskins played great defense and finished 3-for-9 with three two-run home runs. That equals the most a Phillie scored in two straight playoff games.

 

President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski noted, "Rhys has gotten important hits for us throughout this entire series. He is striking the ball far and wide. Rhys Hoskins, in my opinion, best represents who we are as a team in many aspects because he always recovers despite making occasional mistakes. He is tenacious. He is strong. He is one of those men who understand what is happening since he has been here throughout his entire career and is aware of what is required to make this happen.

 

Hoskins had his sixth multihomer postseason game in team history in Game 4 on Saturday. In the first inning, his initial two-run homer
reduced the margin to 4-2. In the fifth, his second knotted the score at 6-6, setting up his teams triumph.

 

And in the games decisive third inning, Hoskins home run off YuDarvish gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead. Hoskins is typically composedand hasn’t been afraid to express emotion after each crucial victory.

 

Bryce Harper, who hit the game-winning home run in the eighth inning and won the NLCS MVP award, said, "Sometimes those

 

moments bring out your identity and your goals. That's a lot of emotion for a guy thats been here for a long time, losing seasons and with a fan base that, of course, can be tough on you but also can love you simultaneously.

 

Playing in a city like this is so much fun, making you want to be great. Unfortunately, they also draw greatness out of you since those are the moments that everyone lives for. Just outstanding for him, and Im so happy for him to be able to experience this. Although he will appreciate this evening, he knows we are not yet finished.
