Since he was a young child, White has been very kind and playful. Since both his parents were active in athletics as children, he soon became involved in extracurricular activities.
Richard, his father, participated in basketball in high school. He used to consider joining the NBA and was a devoted admirer of the Boston Celtics. He never did realize his dream, though.
Richard had no idea that one day his son would play for the Celtics, his favorite NBA team, and become one of the league’s most well-known players.
Derrick demonstrated his commitment to basketball even before he started high school. In Colorado at the same time, Marcus Mason, a former university coach, launched a basketball program called Nothing But Net.
While Mason used to plan camps, White would frequently show up and start shooting and dribbling drills.
Derrick was small, but he had potential. Similarly, because he found satisfaction in the activity, his parents allowed him to devote more time to it.
He chose to attend Parker’s Legend High School for his high school studies, and as it was a relatively new institution, he needed help getting on their basketball team. White rapidly became well-liked by his teammates due to his rapid advancement.
Later, he enrolled at the University of Colorado, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Management.
Basketball Career
High School Career
As a Colorado’s Legend High School freshman, Derrick White was only 5’6″, initially making him less than spectacular to the team management.
But because Kevin Boley, his coach, saw great potential in him, he gave him good instruction. As a result, White was driven and started practicing his athleticism and shooting techniques.
The basketball team from the Legend initially took part in the 3A level tournament because they were a beginner squad. Later, White guided them to the 5A tournament, the highest level of competition in the state.
He also reached a height of over six feet as a senior, finishing the year with averages of 17.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Sadly, he received no scholarship offers from any prestigious universities after graduation.
College Career
White had to settle with the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs because he graduated from high school as a lowly recruited student. But head coach Jeff Culver, who had just been hired, was sure he would succeed.
He was allowed to play for the UCCS Mountain Lions by Culver. Derrick experienced a growth spurt, just as Culver had anticipated, and before the start of his first season, he had reached a height of 6 feet 4 inches.
He thus participated in around three NCAA Division II college seasons with the Lions.
He made great strides every year, and in his final year of college, he was given a chance to play for the Colorado Buffaloes of the University of Colorado Boulder.
He played 34 games during his senior year, scoring 18.1 points and 4.1 rebounds on average.
Professional Career

The Spurs acquired Derrick on July 6, 2017. Later, they added him to the NBA Summer League roster for 2017.
The team gave him a contract to play for the Austin Spurs in the NBA G League after he appeared in a few regular-season NBA games. Unfortunately, he fractured his wrist and missed a few games due to his absence from the court.
After his rehabilitation, he joined the San Antonio Spurs again, playing in a few more regular-season games. Derrick had a dismal rookie campaign, averaging only 3.2 points and 1.5 rebounds per game.
He performed poorly in his debut season, but the club nevertheless gave him a lot of opportunities to play. Despite recently returning from a foot injury, he made a commendable effort.
He also played for the Spurs for three additional seasons while continuing to develop his skills. In his final season with the Spurs, he averaged 5.6 assists per game and 14.4 points.
The San Antonio Spurs had announced his four-year contract extension in 2021, but on February 10, 2022, they sent White to the Boston Celtics.
He competed for the United States in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup in addition to his club career.
