The Jazz and Hawks discuss trading two key players

The Utah Jazz is once again at the center of NBA rumors. The source reports that Utah has held talks with the Atlanta Hawks about a possible swap for Jarred Vanderbilt and Malik Beasley.

“The Jazz and Hawks have discussed a trade around John Collins for Beasley and Vanderbilt, sources say, though Utah has lobbied Atlanta for a first-round pick outside of Collins to complete that framework.”

This trade makes sense for the Jazz for two reasons.

First, with Walker Kessler on the horizon, the Jazz may not have room for two players who can’t space the offense in the half-court. Head coach Hardy has been hesitant to play both Vanderbilt and Kessler, and trading their starting forward could offer Kessler the chance to get some starting time.

Kessler has played 25 minutes or more in seven games this year, and the Jazz is 5-2 in those contests. Hawks forward John Collins’ skill set is a better match for Kessler in stretching the floor.

Second, if the rumors that former Sixth Man of the Year Jordan Clarkson might be retained are true, the Jazz might consider trading one of their guards, given the crowded backcourt. Next year, the Jazz could sign Clarkson, Mike Conley, Collin Sexton, Ojai Agbaji, Nickell Alexander-Walker, and Beasley.

A trade for Utah’s deep-seated position should happen. Still, Beasley’s future with his current team may depend on whether Clarkson re-signs.

Currently, Beasley ranks 4th in the league in 3-pointers made with 136 and has a team-friendly contract since his team option for the 2023-24 season is only $16.5 million. But if the price of keeping Clarkson is too high, the Jazz can choose to keep their sharpshooter.

The trade deadline is Feb. 9, and Jazz fans should expect the rumors to heat up this month.
