Jason Kidd Criticizes Officials for Special Treatment of LeBron James Travels
The Dallas Mavericks head coach, Jason Kidd, jokingly reprimanded LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers, an All-Star forward. LeBron is traveling with the rock in his hands during a break in play during yesterday’s midday Christmas match between the struggling Los Angeles Lakers and the superior Dallas Mavericks. Dallas ultimately won 124-115.
Kidd made fun of James and an accompanying official by saying, “He does travel with the ball, but that’s for college to call travel. This is the NBA.” “This guy [LeBron] right here travels too; by the way, they are beautiful shoes.”
Done in fun, Kidd was somewhat off base with his statements. James typically carries the ball while taking four or five steps. Throughout the NBA this season, the league has been working to enforce its policies about moving and traveling strictly.
NBA All-Stars frequently travel without incident, but the practice has grown so tiresome to watch, even for casual viewers, that the league felt it necessary to start harshly penalizing it. Although some less talented All-Star stars have been whistled, James has yet to feel the effects of that honestly.
As I’m sure you recall, Kidd was Frank Vogel’s assistant head coach in Los Angeles from 2019 to 21. During the incredible 2020 Orlando bubble run, Kidd won a championship with the Lakers.
The 10-time All-Star point guard in the Hall of Fame guided the New Jersey Nets to two NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003, one of which featured your Los Angeles Lakers from the Shaqobe era. Before his eventful coaching career, which included stints as the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks head coach, he was a point guard for the New York Knicks and the Chicago Bulls (they lost, obviously).
While playing for the Mavericks in the 2011 NBA Finals, Kidd faced James and the Miami Heat. Six games later, Dallas had won.
LeBron would, nevertheless, return.
