Golden state warriors mascot
As the Warriors put it in 1996, Berserker wasn’t just born from the Warriors’ gaming operations team to “raise the energy level of the game.” Notably, he’s the first official mascot in the franchise’s 50-year history. A huge honor, even for an anthropomorphic beast. So how did the team’s marketing department get the Bay Area sports audience interested in this never-before-seen addition? They described him as a sewer creature. Berserker owes his combed hairdo to a certificate of perfect attendance from the fictional Fernando Hair and Beauty Academy he found in his locker. But that’s the extent of his traceable work history and upbringing. According to the Warriors, he was first “seen” on November 1, 1996, the team’s regular-season home opener. Like many mysterious sightings, this was an oversight. He made his debut on October 24 of that year during a preseason game in Hampton, Virginia. Above the ad for bringing this furry man in a Hannibal Lecter mask to your next event, the poster’s copy rounds off with a bold warning: “Please do not feed Berserker. He has become dependent on arena food.”
Berserker couldn’t even avoid criticism in moments that could have earned sympathy, like when the man behind the mascot broke his nose trying to dunk on a trampoline.
It’s hard not to think about what Berserker would do if he brought in today’s NBA. Of course, some grumpy diehards and people might believe Berserkers are a nightmare. But with the recent success of strange mascots like the New Orleans Pelicans King Cake Baby and the Philadelphia Flyers’ Gritty, who knows if the social media star or even the left-wing logo, Berserker, would be? It was born decades later. If nothing else, he certainly wasn’t unable to Google.
Instead, Berserker’s enduring legacy is that he was the face of the 1997 Warriors: strange but forgettable, tolerable at best.
