Why did Manchester United sign Casemiro when older players weren’t in their transfer plans?
Depending on whom you ask, Casemiro is either the heir to Manchester United midfield legend Roy Keane or Real Madrid, who can’t wait to be eliminated.
The Brazilian’s €70m arrival at Old Trafford on Monday has raised questions about the reality of Old Trafford’s transfer policy. Is it bad business to give a 30-year-old a four-year contract worth more than £350,000 a week, or it doesn’t matter when you get one of the best defensive midfielders in the world and happen to be a consecutive winner By? Ultimately, as with all transfers, only time will tell.
United didn’t start the summer thinking they would sign players over 30, but sources told ESPN that the Casemiro deal was more of an opportunity that came at the right time. Much of the transfer window has been spent trying to sign 25-year-old Frenkie de Jong, but United thinks it’s becoming too complicated as the Dutchman continues to chase extended wages from Barcelona.
