Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich observed LA Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard grow
Gregg Popovich, the legendary head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, witnessed Kawhi Leonard go from becoming a superstar to a non-lottery choice role player and two-time Finals MVP. He appreciates the effort that went into making this happen.
Kawhi Leonard has improved significantly since he was drafted. Popovich wasn’t a Hall-of-Fame player when he first played for San Antonio, so he said, “Are you kidding? He will most likely be a player in the Hall of Fame. Initially, he wasn’t a player who later became a Hall of Famer. So, I will add that he did a fantastic job and worked extremely hard.”
Leonard had a challenging year after tearing his ACL in the postseason of 2021, but he is finally beginning to regain some of his flow after a protracted hiatus. The Clippers are projected to be a serious contender for the championship if he can get back to his pre-injury form.
Leonard is unquestionably a Hall of Fame player. He has already won the MVP award in the Finals twice and was a part of the NBA’s 75th-anniversary team. Few predicted he would develop into that when he was initially selected, and Gregg Popovich’s coaching was a significant factor in his development as a player. Leonard acknowledged this after the game when questioned about his relationship with Popovich.
