The French duo Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert will turn their attention to winning the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo after winning the French Open doubles championship for the second time.
Mahut and Herbert won all four Grand Slam titles together. They defeated Kazakhstan’s Alexander 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-4 in the French Open final on Saturday. Bublik and Andrei Golubev.
This is their fifth Grand Slam championship as a team.
After they became the first all-France team to win two major championships on clay court since World War II, Mahut fell to the ground, holding his head in his hands.
Mahut and Herbert won their first championship in Paris in 2018.
The emotional Mahut held back his tears, saying that winning the doubles gold medal at the Olympics is likely to be the last big goal of their career.
“We are working very hard to achieve this goal,” he said.
The French pair saved three match points on Thursday, beating second seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in the semifinals.
Bublik and Golubev are fighting to win their first Tour Championship and become the first Kazakh man to win a Grand Slam in any event. The only Kazakhstan player to win a Grand Slam title is Yaroslava Shvedova, who won the women’s doubles at the 2010 Wimbledon and US Open.
The Kazakh combination served 5-4 in the second set, but Bublik was broken after hitting a double error. Mahut and Herbert then dictated the game in the tiebreaker. They saved two break points in the fourth game of the deciding game and led 4-3.
French fans played a cappella version of the French national anthem to celebrate their victory.
