Nicholas Mahut and Pierre Hugues Herbert defeated Alexander Bubrick and Andrei Golubev 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 in the final to win 2021 French Open men’s doubles champion.
This is their second French Open championship and their fifth Grand Slam championship together. They saved the match point in the semifinals against Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah. Bublik and Golubev became the first male Kazakhstan player to enter the Grand Slam final.
After sitting on an equal footing, Bublik and Golubev, their goal is to become the first Kazakh to win a Grand Slam in any event. They won three consecutive games with a score of 2-2 and broke 2018 twice. The French Open champion will lead 5-2. Although the score of the French duo was close to 4-5, Bublik and Golubev kept their serve to seal the victory. They won 80% (16/20) of their first serve points.
Despite being broken at the beginning of the second quarter, the Kazakhs continued to perform well, occupying 40% (8/20) of Herbert and Mahut’s first serve points as they played in the next five games. They won four games and led 5-4. However, the pair entered the third round at the Australian Open in February (l. to Arevalo/Middlecoupe). Two Grand Slam tournaments, but failed to end in a tie when serving. Herbert and Mahut then dominated the tie-break and forced the game into a tiebreaker.
From there, the experience of the French pair showed that they saved two break points and then seized the opportunity to lead 4-3 in the tiebreaker. Herbert and Mahut were dominant in front of the net during the game. Together they won their 18th title.
