Early Life, Childhood & Family

Dewayne Dedmon was born in Lancaster, California, on August 12, 1989, to Gail and Thomas Dedmon.

He grew up in North Los Angeles, Antelope Valley, with his two sisters, Sabrina and Marina, and their single mother, Gail.

When Dedmon was young, his father killed himself. Gail didn’t want her children to play sports because she was a dedicated Jehovah’s Witness.

Gail Lewis trusted in the Bible, saying, “You can only serve one ruler, and if you’re already serving God, it’s hard to serve a team, and it’s unfair to be part of something else.”

Because of this, she didn’t let her talented son Dewayne play sports when he was young.

After turning 18, he told his mother he wanted to play basketball. He then used his right to be an adult and started playing.

In 2008, Dedmon finished Lancaster and became a part-time student at Antelope Valley College.

Career

College Career

Dewayne Dedmon went to Lancaster High School. As a child, he was tall, strong, and athletic, but he didn’t play sports until he was an adult.

It was because his mother disagreed with his religion. Dedmon went to Antelope Valley College after he finished high school.

As a student at Antelope Valley College, Dedmon helped the Marauders get 17-14 records. He averaged 6.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, which was a big part.

Against Chaffey College on January 22, 2010, he had 46 blcks and tied a school record with seven blocks.

Then, five days later, while playing against Victor Valley, he broke a bone in his face.

He hurt his nose when a stray elbow hit him in the wrong place. Because the injury was so bad, he had to miss the last 7 games of the regular season.

The basketball player returned for the playoffs and won his first game against Miramar College on February 24, 2010. He scored 5 points and grabbed 13 boards.

The University of South California (USC)

Dedmon signed a deal with USC on April 14, 2010, but because of NCAA rules about transferring, he didn’t start practicing with USC until 2010-2011.

In 20 games for USC in 2011-2012, Dedmon averaged 7.6 points and 5.5 boards. He had to deal with many illnesses during that time, but he still scored.

On January 19, 2012, he scored 18 points against Oregon, his season high. On January 21, 2012, he scored 8 points and grabbed eight boards against Oregon State.

When he played against Colorado after five days, he tore his left MCL, which ended his season.

As a junior for USC in 2012-2013, Dedmon led the Trojans with an average of 6.7 points and 7.0 boards.

On March 6, 2013, he scored 18 points against Washington, his career-high. Then, he was fired because of the trouble he caused in downtown Spokane. It was between USC players and people who went to a local bar.

After returning, the Trojans have a 14-18 record for the rest of the season. Dedmon averaged 2.1 blocks per game.

He had 85 total blocks by the end of the 2012-2013 season, which was the ninth season he played.

On April 24, 2013, Dedmon revealed that he would skip his last year of eligibility to enter the NBA draft.

On November 20, he was called back again by the Golden State Warriors. He was sent to a different team on November 24 but was called back the next day.
