RUI HACHIMURA BASKETBALL CAREER

High School Career: Mesei High School

 

Rui Hachimura started his journey to the NBA while he was still a resident of Japan. He studied at Sendai, Japan’s Meisei High School. Rui assisted Mesei in capturing its second championship at the All-Japan High School Tournament on December 29, 2013. Hachimura’s 32-point performance propelled them to victory. He guided Mesei to a second straight victory in 2014. Rui signed his National Letter of Intent to play for Gonzaga after being invited to compete in the 2015 Jordan Brand Classic. Rui led Mesei to its third consecutive championship after committing to Gonzaga, scoring 34 points, pulling down 19 rebounds, and blocking three shots this time.

 

 

College Career: Gonzaga Bulldogs

Rui’s eligibility was doubted before joining Gonzaga, despite being a 3-star recruit. Even though Rui claimed to understand 80% of English, he needed to pass the SAT to get admitted to college. They debated whether Rui should enroll in prep school or redshirt his first season at Gonzaga. Instead, Rui continued to succeed, passing the SAT and attaining the necessary GPA to play for Gonzaga in his first year.

 

Hachimura only managed one point and three rebounds in four minutes against Utah Valley in his Bulldogs debut. With 10 points versus Mississippi Valley State, he had his best game of the season. Rui became only the fifth Japanese-born athlete to play in NCAA Division I despite having a lackluster freshman season; nevertheless, in his sophomore year, Rui showed growth, scoring 11.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

 

Rui Hachimura broke out in his junior year, and his name was last known nationally. Rui scored 33 points in a victory over Idaho State on November 6, 2018. After the Bulldogs defeated Duke in the Maui Invitational finals, Hachimura assisted them in becoming the nation’s best team. The tournament’s Most Valuable Player award was then given to him. Hachimura had an outstanding junior season, averaging 19.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest.
