Early Life

Congolese professional basketball player Jonathan Kuminga was born on October 6, 2002, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Basketball is in Kuminga’s blood, and he’s been playing it for as long as he can remember. His parents played basketball in their hometown, and his older brother played at Texas Tech.

Likewise, his cousin Emmanuel Mudiay played for the Jazz, while another, Omari Gudul, played professionally in Romania. Despite all odds and making it to the NBA, playing competitive basketball in Africa is less convenient than in the United States.

Kuminga used to walk for hours to find a suitable basketball court. Despite all the struggles & hardships, his passion for the game remained undiminished, & at the age of 13, he realized his love for basketball was growing.

It also made him realize that he could only stay in DOC for a while if he were serious about reaching his full potential. It prompted him to make a difficult decision to leave his hometown and travel thousands of miles to start his NBA dream in the United States.

Kuminga has been playing basketball since he was two years old. When he was in junior high, several recruiting agencies had ranked him at the top of his class.

Education

After moving to the United States in 2016, Jonathan Kuminga began playing for the Huntington Reserve as a freshman. His play caught the attention of scouts, and he quickly became a five-star recruit. He eventually transferred to Our Savior New American Centereach in New York for his sophomore year.

His extraordinary talent quickly made him the MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year and the No. 1 junior in the country’s rankings. On top of that, he was named the MVP of the Beach Dunk Contest after scoring 40 points in January 2019.

Likewise, he transferred to Patrick School in New Jersey for his junior season. He was the best small forward in the 2020 class and was a proven five-star recruit by the end of his career in high school.

On July 15, 2020, despite receiving offers from Auburn, Kentucky, Duke, and Texas Tech, he announced he was giving up college basketball to join the NBA G League Ignite.

Age, height, weight, etc.

Kuminga was born in 2002 and will be 20 years old in 2023. Warrior’s power forward Cummings is 2.01 meters tall. Again, he weighs about 225 lbs.

Profession

On July 15, 2020, Jonathan signed a one-year contract with the NGA G League Ignite and made his debut on February 10, 2021, scoring 19 points, four assists, and four rebounds. The 2-foot-1 forward is averaging 15.8 points, 2.7 assists, & 7.2 rebounds as a 19-year-old, doing the work for Ignite on both ends of the court.

Many draft analysts rank Jonathan as a top-five pick in the 2021 draft. As expected, the Golden State Warriors selected him as the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. On October 30, he made his team debut, contributing 3 points and one steal in a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Since Kevin Durant left, the Warriors have lacked a versatile wing who can create his shot. They could have it all if Jonathan kept honing his skills. His season, despite playing exceptionally well, he’s been sidelined by the Warriors until reevaluated due to a sprained right foot.

He returned to training last January 12, 2023, but did not play. Once he gets some high-intensity practice reps, he should be back.
