High School Career (Huntington Prep)

Andrew Wiggins began his high school education at Vaughan Secondary School in Ontario. He played there for two seasons, leading the squad to a 44-1 record and a provincial championship in his sophomore season. Wiggins completed his high school education in the United States at Huntington Prep in West Virginia in search of a more challenging opponent and more exposure to advance his profession.

 

 

Wiggins, a talented scorer, averaged over 23 points per game throughout his two seasons at Huntington Prep. He also averaged 2.6 blocks per game during the same two seasons. College Career (Kansas)

Wiggins decided to play college basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks under Bill Self. In his lone season with the Jayhawks, he scored over 17 points per game and advanced far enough in the voting for the Wooden Award and the Naismith Award as the finest player in college basketball.

 

In Wiggins’ only appearance at the NCAA Tournament, Kansas earned a two-seed alongside Joel Embiid. But before the Jayhawks could advance to the Sweet 16, 10-seed Stanford stunned them thanks to an injury to star forward Joel Embiid and a performance of only four points in the second round. Wiggins declared he would be entering the NBA Draft after the defeat by Stanford ended his season.

 

NBA Career

The Cleveland Cavaliers selected Andrew Wiggins as the first overall choice in the 2014 NBA Draft. Before he had the chance to play in a single game with LeBron James and the Cavaliers, Wiggins was subsequently traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. In a three-team transaction that sent Kevin Love to the Cavaliers, he and Anthony Bennett were transferred from Cleveland to the Wolves.

 

Unfortunately for Wiggins, the move prevented him from participating in the playoffs immediately soon since Love and James were leading the Cavaliers, who frequently reached the NBA Finals. The Canadian’s situation wasn’t all awful, though, as he won Minnesota Vikings rookie of the year accolades in his debut campaign. In his debut season, which won him several awards, Wiggins scored 16.9 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.1 apg, 1.0 stls, and 0.6 bpg in 36.2 mpg.

 

Wiggins played with Karl-Anthony Towns, the Timberwolves’ first-round pick the following year. The Wolves hoped they might effectively rebuild under the leadership of the two young stars for the first time since the Kevin Garnett era. With Wiggins and Towns, the Timberwolves could have lived up to expectations, as they only made the playoffs once when they were together. Wiggins only made 60% of his free throw attempts in the series, which the Wolves lost 4-1 to the Houston Rockets in the 2017–18 season.

 

Even so, Wiggins’ stint with the Timberwolves had its share of memorable moments. In January 2020, while playing for the Wolves, he marked his first triple-double, tallying 18 points, ten rebounds, and 11 assists against the Toronto Raptors. As a member of the Wolves, he also hit a career-high of 47 points in a single game, displaying flashes of brilliance throughout his time in Minnesota.

 

The Golden State Warriors traded Wiggins, and two draft picks to the Minnesota Wolves in February 2020 in exchange for D’Angelo Russell and two other players. With Steph Curry and Klay Thompson as teammates, Wiggins now has the opportunity to fight against the Lakers and Clippers in the competitive Pacific division.

 

In addition, Wiggins has already competed for Canada on their national team, helping them to a bronze medal in the 2015 FIBA AmeriCup. Canada wants to see him at future Olympic competitions.
