Early Life and Education

Caldwell Pope was born in Thomaston, Georgia, on February 18, 1993, to parents Lawrence Pope and Rhonda Caldwell. Caldwell has two siblings, one of whom is Trevon Pope (the other’s name is unknown).

He went to Greenville High School in Greenville, Georgia, and was a famous player there, averaging 31 points and 8.2 rebounds per game and leading the Patriots to the State Class A Final Four in 2011. He was a part of the Georgia Bulldogs during his undergraduate career.

Before making his professional debut, he continued studying and attended to study at the University of Georgia, where he played basketball.

High School Career

Caldwell-Pope was a highly regarded high school athlete. He scored 31 points and 8.2 rebounds per game as a senior at Greenville High School in Greenville, Georgia. He guided the Patriots to the 2011 State Class A Final Four and two consecutive Sweet 16 appearances in 2009-10.

As a senior, he was named to many prominent high school All-America teams, including the 2011 McDonald’s All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic.

As a senior, he was listed the nation’s No. 3 shooting guard prospect and the No. 12 overall prospect by Rivals.com recruiting analysts.

College Career

Caldwell-Pope was chosen to the Coaches’ Freshman All-SEC Team as a freshman, alongside NBA lottery pick Bradley Beal, Anthony Davis, and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. His best performance as a freshman was 25 points versus Ole Miss, the most by a UGA freshman in over 13 years.

Caldwell-Pope was selected SEC Player of the Year as a sophomore after scoring 18.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. In his final collegiate game, he scored 32 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a loss to LSU at the SEC tournament in Nashville. After the season, he was announced for the NBA draft.

Professional Career

Detroit Piston

On June 27, 2013, the Detroit Pistons selected Caldwell-Pope with the eighth overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draught. On July 19, 2013, he signed a rookie scale contract with the Pistons after joining the team for the 2013 NBA Summer League. Despite the team’s loss, he set a career-high with 30 pts against the Oklahoma City Thunder on April 16, 2014.

Caldwell-Pope returned to the Pistons for the NBA Summer League in July 2014, appearing in five games and averaging 24.0 points and 7.4 rebounds. Caldwell-Pope was immediately identified by head coach Stan Van Gundy as his best perimeter defender, and he ended up leading the Pistons with 2,587 minutes played.

Caldwell-Pope improved after the All-Star break, thanks partly to the squad’s acquisition of point guard Reggie Jackson; he averaged 14.3 points per game following the holiday. He made 153 three-pointers, 70 more than the next closest Pistons player. He and Kevin Love tied for 16th place in the NBA.

Caldwell-Pope scored 31 points in a 119-116 victory over the Boston Celtics on December 16, 2015. In 2015-16, he helped the Pistons to a 44-38 regular-season record and an eighth-place finish in the Eastern Conference.

Caldwell-Pope recorded a season-high 27 points against the Phoenix Suns on November 9, 2016. On January 8, 2017, he finished with 26 points after making a three-pointer with 9.4 seconds left in double overtime to help the Pistons overcome the Portland Trail Blazers, 125-124.

On February 1, 2017, he set a career-high with 38 points in a 118-98 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. He also scores a career-high eight three-pointers on 11 attempts. Caldwell-Pope led the Pistons to an overtime 114-108 win over the Charlotte Hornets on February 23, 2017, scoring 33 points, including three three-pointers late in the fourth quarter during a Detroit comeback.

On July 13, 2017, Caldwell-Pope and the Los Angeles Lakers agreed to a one-year, $18 million contract. On November 27, 2017, he set a season-high with 29 points against the Los Angeles Clippers. Caldwell-Pope pled guilty on December 13, 2017, for violating his probation during the summer.

On February 24, 2018, he scored a season-high 34 points and made a career-high eight 3-pointers to defeat the Sacramento Kings 113-108. On March 22, 2018, he shot eight 3-pointers and scored 28 points in a 128-125 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.

On July 6, 2018, Caldwell-Pope allegedly agreed to a one-year, $12 million contract with the Lakers. On December 16, 2018, he averaged a season-high 25 pts in a 128-110 loss to the Washington Wizards.

Los Angeles Lakers

Caldwell-Pope agreed to a one-year, $18 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers on July 13, 2017. On October 22, 2017, he made his Lakers debut, starting and scoring 20 points in a 119-112 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.

Caldwell-Pope re-signed with the Lakers on July 6, 2018, for a one-year, $12 million contract. He had a season-high 25 points in a 128-110 loss against the Washington Wizards on December 16, 2018.

Caldwell-Pope re-signed with the Lakers in 2019 on a two-year deal worth around $16 million. In 2019-20, he scored a career-high 38.5% of his 3-point attempts and finished third on the team with 92.
