Make it flow? Lenient referees end up making football worse, not better
If you’ve been following the new Premier League season closely, you’ll notice the pundits grunt about the interpretation of the “new” referee: trying to get the game going and calling fewer fouls than before.
If you followed the Premier League closely last season, you would have noticed that they said the same this time last year.
Then, they do seem to make sense. From 2020-21 to 2021-22, the number of fouls per game dropped from 21.8 to 20.2 per game. A relatively slight drop, sure, but still a drop.
