Oklahoma City kicked off its five-game road trip Saturday night with a win against Minnesota on a positive note. The Thunder enters the Northwest Division’s basement on Sunday, 4.5 games behind the Denver Nuggets for the highest spot in the division after winning their second straight game.
The Thunder trailed 44-34 in the third quarter, trailed by four going into the final quarter, trailed by three with 8:44 left, and then followed by 119 with 5:52 left. The score of 110 achieved a 119-110 lead. Oklahoma City Thunder never saw their lead drop below 6 the rest of the way to earn the win. The Thunder shot 51.6 percent from the field, including 11 of 26 from 3-point range, forcing 23 turnovers to offset Minnesota’s 52.8 percent field goal percentage. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led Oklahoma City with 33 pts and six assists in the win.
Atlanta beat Denver as an underdog at home on Friday night for its second straight win after a three-game slump. The Hawks enter Sunday with a two-game lead over the Heat and Wizards for 1st place in the Southeast Division. Against Denver, Atlanta started with a 13-2 lead, even though they led by only three points after the start. Halfway through the second quarter, the Eagles led the Nuggets 18-6 and 60-46 at halftime. After trailing by one with 2:37 left in the third quarter, Atlanta outscored Denver 12-2 for a nine-point lead.
The Hawks won by holding the Nuggets close to three the rest of the way. Atlanta shot 55.7 percent from the field, including 10 of 28 from 3-point range, and won the rebounding battle 43-33, shrugging off Denver’s 52.9 percent shooting. Dejounte Murray led the Eagles to victory with 34 points and eight assists.
Atlanta has a few days off going into this game without any travel, while Oklahoma City begins its five-game road trip on Saturday night. As far as star players go, both teams have question marks. The Thunder are just 3-8 on the road this season, and this will be a test of their five-game road trip. The Hawks have struggled at home, going 6-6, but they’re coming back strong after beating the Nuggets on Friday night. Even with the injury issues, Atlanta is the better team right now, which helps them get home wins under Murray.
