Russell Westbrook trade talk

The Lakers are likely to begin trade negotiations with the Jazz this season

Later in the season, it was rumored that the Lakers and Jazz would begin talking about a trade. The Lakers are anticipated to ultimately pick back up those trade talks this season after discussing with the Jazz this summer.

The Lakers scored the NBA landscape during the summer, searching for a deal for Russell Westbrook. With Westbrook joining the season as a Laker, stops in Brooklyn, Indiana, Charlotte, and Utah failed.

His performance in his first three games of his second season in Los Angeles, particularly his late-game error against the Blazers, has been anything but impressive. Naturally, and probably appropriately, the attention of those outside the club has been on finding a solution to the Russ dilemma, whether through trade, benching, or John Walling.

Despite the summer’s shortcomings, the first of those choices still has a chance of happening. The Lakers and Jazz, particularly Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer, is anticipated to resume trade negotiations.

When that time comes, Los Angeles will look into deals involving center Myles Turner and wing Buddy Hield with the Pacers. Although those discussions are on hold, Turner and Hield would provide much-needed shooting, and Turner would give depth for rim protection behind Davis, who is prone to injury.

For months, Utah has also been linked to the Lakers. According to league insiders, the Lakers offered Bojan Bogdanovic and others for Russell Westbrook, a future first-round selection, and second-round picks before the Jazz traded him to the Pistons. Several additional players are expected to be mentioned when the Lakers and Jazz begin negotiations later in the season. (Utah has three veterans who can make all shoots: Jordan Clarkson, Mike Conley, and Rudy Gay.)

Until Russ, Myles Turner, or Buddy Hield are moved or the trade is genuinely agreed upon, the Pacers deal will only exist in theory, as KOC hinted. The Lakers were quite close to finalizing the transaction, but they held off and haven’t done so since.

With Bojan Bogdanovic no longer a possibility, Utah’s package for the Jazz is considerably less appealing. Even though the Lakers may be close to a deal in the past, things have significantly altered since then. They will put Danny Ainge’s affection for future draft selections to the test because Utah cannot possibly put together a package that would justify two first-round picks.

However, if it isn’t a deal-breaker, something might be arranged such that the Jazz could save money and tank, which seems to be their long-term objective, and the Lakers could upgrade.

When they would bring up these discussions again is one of the other vital issues. The Lakers encourage patience but have lost their first three games and face a challenging schedule for their first twelve games. How many more defeats must the team endure before Rob Pelinka and the front office are compelled to act?

That will be the power Ainge and the rest of the league will have over the Lakers until a deal is completed, further muddying the waters of the trade negotiations.
