Pistons-Magic seats cleared in heated NBA scenes after player knocked out by ‘dirty’ act
The benches cleared and three players were removed from Little Caesar’s Arena soon before halftime, setting off wild scenes in Detroit.
When the Magic’s ball dropped end with 30 seconds left in the 1st half, the Pistons were leading the Magic 63-44 and Mo Wagner of Orlando and Killian Hayes of Detroit were after it.
Despite Hayes’ best efforts, the ball appeared destined to go out of bounds when 25-year-old Magic rival Wagner delivered him a shoulder bump, pushing him into the Pistons bench.
As soon as the incident occurred, Wagner held his hand up as if to apologize, but Hamidou Diallo pushed the German before Hayes seemed to strike him in the back of the head.
As chaos breaks out behind him, camera angles show Wagner collapsing heavily into the arms of several of the Detroit crew.
Fans disagreed on whether Wagner was indeed knocked out or if he was acting dead to stop the altercation.
However, as Wagner stood up and left the situation, he did show signs of shock and shakiness.
The Magic nevertheless emptied the bench to assist their players, and despite much shoving and pushing, the teams eventually became separated.
“Nobody moves,” the announcer in the arena said. Hold onto your seats. Keep sitting in your chairs.
One of the commentators observed, “Things have gone out of control at Little Caesars Arena.”
Another claimed that it was obvious that Hayes had “punched the back of the head.”
The officials kicked out Diallo, Hayes, and Wagner once the dust settled, but it’s unlikely that’s the last we’ll hear of the matter.
“Didn’t even notice Wagner been KO’d, the hit to the back of the head didn’t really appear that hard,” tweeted Mike Golic Jr. of Draftkings. Upon second thought, I wonder if he was already down when he was pushed into the pistons bench occupant.”
Kyle Madson, a sports pundit, said: “That Mo Wagner video looked scary, bro.”
He continued:
”1. Wagner’s opening thrust is a risky play and trash.”
“2. After the initial back push, was Wagner out? I find that to be very strange.”
Jonathan Zaslow, a broadcaster, said: “Whoa! Mo Wagner is playing a very sleazy game here. But you strike a man in the back of the head (out?) Ten games will be given to Killian Hayes. Easy.”
“Mo Wagner being put to sleep by Killian Hayes with a bunny punch is not what I had on the #Pistons Bingo Card,” wrote Detroit radio journalist Jay Scott Smith on Twitter.
The Magic may be without the majority of its players for the following game after leaving the bench, which constitutes a suspension in the NBA, according to a source.
