In the NBA’s regular season opening, Boston defeats Philadelphia
Last June, the Boston Celtics advanced to the NBA Finals. They did, though, go into the new campaign with many uncertainties after a year-long suspension of their coach and hiring a player without any prior experience at this level. Despite those distractions, the Celtics seemed to be a strong candidate again in their opening game of the season.
The Celtics take control in the second half to pull off a 126-117 victory over a Sixers club that had been restructured and strengthened with several new additions over the summer. The expected suspects took the lead for Boston.
In the game, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown both scored 35 points. Tatum also had 12 rebounds and four assists. Marcus Smart, the Celtics’ current defensive player of the year, also contributed 14 points and seven assists.
Philadelphia was led by James Harden, who finished with 35 points, seven assists, and eight rebounds. The MVP runner-up from the previous year, Joel Embiid, ended with 26 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists.
Only so much can be implied from the year’s opening game, but even without their starting center Robert Williams, the Celtics looked quite threatening. Boston may be tough to overthrow if he is back. Philadelphia’s Sixers have obvious issues that need to be addressed, but with all of the new components they’re implementing, they shouldn’t be overly demoralized after just one game.
