Who is the most successful World Cup player?

The man born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, later known as Pele, burst onto the world football stage at the age of 16, performing for both Santos club and Brazil national team outstanding.

In 1958, Pele won his first World Cup in Sweden, a match in which the genius played a major role. In his only first-round appearance, he set up a goal before scoring the only goal in the quarter-final win over Wales. He scored a hat-trick in the semi-final against France before scoring twice in the final, beating the hosts 5-2.

He would win his second trophy in the next race, in Chile in 1962, although his contribution would be more limited. After scoring and assisting in Brazil’s 2-0 win over Mexico, Pele was injured in the next game and missed the rest of the game. But Brazil will continue on the path set by their talisman, claiming a second consecutive trophy, the last and one of only two to do so.

Pele’s third and final victory came in 1970, returning to World Cup competition after he vowed not to play after a brutal, targeted tackle during the 1966 World Cup. He made the right decision – not only did Pele play well in Mexico, but he also won the Ballon d’Or, scoring four goals, including the pick to open the scoring in the eventual 4-1 win over Italy .

Aside from Pele, only 20 others have won the World Cup multiple times, but none remained good and relevant long enough to finish third and match the legend. Of those 20, eight won trophies at a World Cup that has never seen a stadium. Of those 20 players, 13 won the double with the same team Pele played for in 1958 and 1962.

Only one country has won three World Cups since Pele finally won, and Germany didn’t achieve that until the 2014 World Cup.
