Kevin Love urges the Cavaliers to honor Kyrie Irving
The instant Kyrie Irving, the first overall choice in the 2011 NBA Draft, was traded, the Cleveland Cavaliers underwent a permanent transformation. Not only was the team designed to compete for championships, but it also inspired NBA legend LeBron James, to return home and deliver the first-ever championship.
Kyrie Irving’s story didn’t have a happy ending because he wanted to stand out on his own, but his legacy will live on forever in the shape of a banner atop the arena. That will be Irving’s lasting contribution to the city that gave him a chance from the beginning.
Because of this, one of the best players on that championship team, Kevin Love, not only lauded his former teammate but also stated what the Cavaliers should do once Irving stopped playing basketball.
As a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 2016 NBA Champion team, Kevin Love is qualified to speak about tributes for any other members of that legendary group. Love commended Kyrie Irving in an interview with cleveland.com, saying, “The shots he makes, you just have to sit there and say, ‘Not much you can do about it.’ It’s been that way his whole career.”
“No doubt about it. Absolutely. When asked about the Cavaliers retiring Irving’s jersey, Love told a source, “Right away, after his career finishes. To me, it’s not even a question. He must be in that position. Consider how it all transpired — what it intended for the city, for his career, for LeBron’s legacy, and everything else, including that Golden State team, which went on to become a dynasty and was historically outstanding. He hit the largest shot in team history and one of the most powerful shots in Finals history.”
Irving took time out of his night after the Cavs game to sign autographs for fans, especially children, young adults, and many ladies, in the Cavs’ home parking lot, even though his leaving infuriated Cavs fans. He undoubtedly will live on in Cavs lore forever.
